Crisis Referral Protocol
Last updated: October 20, 2026
The coach in AI Calorie Camera is an AI, not a person. If you tell the coach that you are thinking about suicide, want to hurt yourself, or may hurt someone else, it stops being a nutrition coach for that message. This page explains how we spot these messages, what the coach shows, and what we count.
What we check
Every message is checked before anything else happens — before free-message limits and before the coach writes any answer.
- A fixed list of phrases. We check every message against a fixed list of clear first-person phrases about suicide, self-harm and self-punishing eating, in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese. This check runs on our own servers, and a match shows the crisis message right away.
- An AI check. When our safety limits allow, the message is also checked by Google's AI (Gemini), which is instructed to lean toward showing the crisis message when it is unsure whether you may be at risk. When those limits are reached, only the fixed list is used.
Mentions of the topic in the news or about other people, and obvious figures of speech, are not treated as a crisis.
If your profile says you are under 18, the coach does not answer, but your message is still checked against the fixed list. That check happens only on our own servers: the message is not sent to Google or any other AI.
What the coach shows
The coach does not write a reply of its own. It shows one fixed message that encourages you to contact a crisis line now, and to call emergency services if you or someone else is in immediate danger. This message does not use up your free messages, and it is shown whether or not you have a paid plan and whatever age is in your profile.
Where we refer you
The crisis line is chosen from the region in your device's language setting (for example, Spanish (Mexico)), not from where you are.
- United States988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: call or text 988. In Spanish, call 988 and press 2, or text "Ayuda" to 988.Emergency: 911

What we count
Each time the coach shows the crisis message, we record that it happened, with the date, the language, the region, and whether the phrase list or the AI check caught it. That record does not include the words you wrote. The message you sent is handled like any other coach message, as described in the Privacy Policy.
Beginning in 2027 we will report the yearly number of crisis referrals, and this protocol, to the California Office of Suicide Prevention, as California law (SB 243) requires. The report contains no names, account identifiers, or other personal information.
Limits
No automated check catches everything. The coach is not a crisis service and cannot contact anyone for you. If you are in danger, call your local emergency number.
